The Basque house or “etxe” is characterized by its whitewashed facades, its asymmetrical two-sided roofs covered with tiles and its red, green or blue woodwork.

There are beautiful examples of traditional Basque houses in the villages of Ainhoa, Espelette or Sare for example, which are among the "most beautiful villages in France", but also in Saint Jean de Luz, Ciboure, Itxassou, Ascain , Saint Pée sur Nivelle, Ahetze, Arbonne or Arcangues.

Neo-Basque architecture was brought back into fashion at the beginning of the 20th century by architects such as the Gomez Brothers, Henri Godbarge, André Pavlovsky or Albert Duplantier. In Saint Jean de Luz, you can see beautiful neo-Basque villas from 1930s in the Sainte Barbe, Aice Errota and Moleressenia districts or in the Chantaco Golf district.
